About Sheila

I've been traveling to San Diego schools and neighborhoods in my mobile woodshop classroom (converted city bus) since 1974. Teaching children to build with hand tools is practical, relevant, and productive and the interest of parents and the excitement of the children to work with "real tools" continues to give my life purpose.

The current "storefront" is a 1984 GMC RTS04 (bus) outfitted with 8 individual and adjustable woodworking benches. Previous "storefronts" include a 1954 Crown, a 1974 Twin Coach, and a 1966 Flxible Coach and parents who took classes in one of those are now bringing their children to the "new" woodworking bus for the same exciting experience with real tools as they had. Aside from a few banged-on fingers, each bus has proudly carried a superb safety record. This is the popular "Build It" program that was held at San Diego YMCA's from 1998-2015, created and taught by the same and current instructor, Sheila Dawson.
